Dr. Seuss Week!

Since we were still off track when Dr. Seuss had his birthday, we had fun celebrating it this week instead!  We wrote our own version of "Green Eggs and Ham" and worked on it all week long.  The kids who had turns helping write got to wear our special Cat in the Hat hat!

We also read a poem about Dr. Seuss and hunted for the word "and."

Monday we had a great time making our own oobleck after reading the book, "Bartholomew and the Oobleck."  The kids were grateful I did the yucky part of mixing it!

The kids each got some oobleck to play with and wrote about how it smelled, looked, and felt.

For math time, we read "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" and sorted and counted our own colorful goldfish crackers.

We also read The Cat in the Hat this week!  The girls in our class enjoyed listening to Justin Bieber reading them the story.  ;)

We made our own Thing 1 and Thing 2 with our hand prints and then practiced writing -ing words this week.  We also wrote about what we would like to have jump out of the box if the Cat in the Hat brought it to our house!

After reading Green Eggs and Ham, we made up our own class book.  (I would have loved to make green eggs and ham, but the food rules are pretty strict at school).  :(  We used pictures of food from magazines to write a rhyme.

"I do not like green eggs and ham.  But I would eat lemon on a seven."

"I do not like green eggs and ham.  But I would eat cake on a lake."

After reading Dr. Seuss' ABC book, we made our own class book.  Each person was in charge of a letter of the alphabet.  We drew pictures and labeled our pictures.

We also read, "There's a Wocket in my Pocket" and made our own make-believe creature in a pocket.  It was a fun rhyming and writing activity!

For center time, we read Dr. Seuss books,

Spelled Dr. Seuss words,

Sorted real and nonsense words,

Read Dr. Seuss words as we played a game,

Sorted words by word family,

Practiced reading color words with different colored eggs,

And hunted for sight words in a book about Dr. Seuss.

For math time this week, we finished learning about the 3D shapes.  The kids enjoyed finding real life objects that were each shape.

We also ate some more shapes while finishing up our 3D shape books!

Our DARE officer came this week to help us learn more about personal safety.  We discussed how to be safe from strangers, in the road, on the playground, and other places.  The kids learned a lot and it would be a great thing for you to review at home with them!

We got some fun new light pointers for our fingers that have been a big hit during reading time this week!  If you are interested in getting some for home, I got them HERE.

On Friday, we played a fun game in PE!  We played "Clean your room" and the kids had to throw as many fluff-balls to the other side's room as they could before I blew the whistle.  Once the whistle blew, the kids worked together to count their fluff balls.  They put them in groups of ten and counted them by tens and added the few leftover.  It was a wonderful math exercise!  The side with the fewest fluff-balls won!

Avery was our star student this week and everyone loved her silly hat!  It makes Avery laugh and made the rest of us laugh too!
