Welcome March and 100 Day!

It was so nice to come back on track and have the frigid temperatures and nasty flu viruses behind us!  I am so glad it is March and spring is on its way!  This week, we discussed the saying, "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb."  We read a story that helped us understand what that saying meant and then we made some fun new decorations for our classroom ceiling!

On Wednesday, we finally celebrated our 100th day of school!  This is a big milestone and an exciting day for the kids.  They all had to go through our 100 day banner when they came to school in the morning!

Our poem for the week was about counting to 100.  We found the word "can" and also looked for the number "100."

For class writing time, we made lists of things we would want 100 of and things we would not 100 of.  It was a fun activity!

We had special 100 day centers during center time on Wednesday!
 Writing 100 words

 Painting 100 gumballs

Writing in our 100 day booklets

And our "Do 100 things" paper

We also made pictures using the numbers 1 0 0 and turned them into something else!  Here are some kids who made a spoon and plate, butterfly, tiger, and dragon!  These will be in their end of year portfolios.

For math time, we hunted around the room for the numbers 1-100 and marked them on a 100 chart as we found them.

For writing time, we made pictures of what we think we will look like when we are 100 years old.  We also wrote about what we would do, wear, eat, and things like that.  It was pretty funny to read their responses.

They are up in the hallway now, so take a look at them if you are in the school!

In math this week, we started learning about 3D/solid shapes.  At the end of this unit, the kids should be able to recognize and name spheres, cones, cubes, and cylinders.  Here is a fun song to help them learn the names:

We began our investigation of 3D shapes by talking about how they are different from 2D or flat shapes.  We did some tests and found that 3D shapes can do things like roll, stack, and slide.

During center time, we sorted our 3D shape blocks.

The kids also sorted pictures of real-life objects by shape.

I also brought in real-life objects for the kids to see as we talked about their shape.

We have been having a great time eating 3D shapes as we have been writing about them in a book.  (Thanks to everyone who donated an item)!

This week, we learned about the -ing family!

We hunted for words around the room that had the -ing family in them and wrote them on a crown.

The kids had a great time being the kings (and queens) of -ing!

During center time this week, we practiced digraphs, (sh, ch, th, and wh).

We also built our word wall words.

And thanks to Olivia and her mom, we had a wonderful time telling stories with our new puppet theater!

Burke was our star student and had fun telling us about his brothers who are special to him.  We also got a new student named Maeby!  She just moved here from Australia and we are so glad she is in our class!

Thanks to everyone who made it to the family week events!  It was great to see so many of you at the activities.  Here are a few boys from our class at the magic show!  Everyone had a great time!
