Au/aw, Shapes, and Maps!

We had a great week together!  We focused on the au/aw sounds and we made the letters into cute babies that made us say "awww!" to remember the sound.  We also finished up our time unit and talked about shapes in math this week.  We discussed squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles.  We had the best time making triangles different ways with our shape blocks!  In social studies, we learned about maps and globes.  We had Caden's dad, who is a map-maker for movie and TV shows, come and talk to us!  He even gave all the kids a real map from the newest SpongeBob movie.  It was pretty cool.  We learned maps have a title, directions, and special landmarks.  We also spent time learning the names of the seven continents and the oceans.  Enjoy the pictures!

OInks and CowbOYs, Telling Time, and Solid/Liquid/Gas

This week we learned about the OI and OY sounds.  On Monday, we made pig snouts and oinked around the room while finding words with OI and writing them on our pig noses.  After we were done, we wrote stories about a pig using as many OI words as we could.  On Tuesday, we made cowboy hats and wrote words with the OY sounds on our hats.  Then we wrote a cowboy story and had a lot of fun using our imaginations.  We finished up our fun writing on Wednesday by writing a make-believe story about a pig, a cowboy, and a magic coin.  In math, we started a unit on time.  We talked about time in our day and made a class book of the story, "The Grouchy Ladybug."  We also did some fun activities to tell time to the hour and half hour.  The kids are getting pretty good at it!  Science was the best part of our week!  We learned all about solids, liquids, and gases.  We did lots of experiments and investigations.  We looked at balloons that had ice, water, and air in them.  We cooked ice cubes and watched them change from solid to liquid to gas...and then disappear!  We also had a solid, liquid, and gas treat and made root beer floats!  We finished up our week with PINK day to support our custodian Mike and his wife in her battle against breast cancer.  Enjoy the pictures!
