Living vs Non-Living

This week we learned what all living things have in common.  (The kids got a kick out of the "getting rid of waste" part).  ;)

We worked on sorting living and non-living things.

Then we found a picture of something living and non-living in a magazine and wrote why we knew the things were living and non-living.

We also hunted around the room for living and non-living things and checked them off on a recording sheet.

We finished up our study of living and non-living things with a picture sort.

On Tuesday, we learned about the things a plant needs to survive.  We decorated cups and made them into funny people.  Then we added soil, grass seed, and water.
I hope everyone has a fun time taking care of their living thing while we are off-track!  Send me a picture when your grass-head cup has lots of "hair"!

Here is a fun song the kids have enjoyed about the needs of a plant:

We also drew a plant with all of the things it needs to survive and labeled it.

We had lots of fun plant-themed centers this week:
Counting peas

Sorting seed packets by word family

Writing about the 5 senses of spring

Thinking of rhyming words that we found on radishes

Subtracting flowers and writing the matching equations

Listening to "The Tiny Seed"

You can also watch it here:

Reading informational books about living things

Matching consonant blends on seed packets to the correct picture on a flower

Writing teen numbers we found on strawberries as tens and ones

Stamping the ending sounds of words we found on seed packets

Using lima bean seeds to practice subtracting from 10

*****
In math, we have been working on computational fluency.  This means we are practicing adding and subtracting quickly.  We played a fun game called five-in-a-row.

We also played a matching game where we made partners of ten.

Thank you for the fun teacher appreciation week!  I loved all the notes, treats, and classroom supplies!

Michael was our star student and showed us his special blanket.

We also sang happy birthday to Maddison, Madisen, and Madison!  What are the chances that all three of these girls have birthdays right in a row?!  Thanks for the yummy treats so we could celebrate with you!

On Friday, I brought popsicles for the kids and we had a fun time eating them and playing on the playground for PE time.  It has been so nice that the weather has finally started to warm up!

Enjoy your off-track time and I hope to see some of you at our swimming and park days coming up! :)
